Karen, a Vancouver native, was immersed in a family of chefs, fostering her early fascination with sensory science. Pursuing this passion, she obtained a diploma in food technology from BCIT.

Her journey in the food sciences industry spanned three years, during which Karen refined her technical prowess and crafted several enduring food products still prevalent in the market today.

Driven by her scientific culinary background, Karen delved into the intricate world of wine at Andrés Wines (now Andrew Peller Limited), swiftly ascending to Assistant Winemaker within two years. This venture sparked her enduring quest for understanding the complexities and nuances of winemaking.

Relocating to Kelowna in 2005, Karen assumed the role of winemaker at Calona Wines before assuming leadership at Red Rooster Winery on the Naramata Bench in 2006. Over her 15-year tenure, Karen garnered a plethora of awards and accolades from esteemed competitions, revitalizing the brand’s sparkling wine program and amplifying its legacy.

In 2014, Karen expanded her sensory journey by enrolling in the WSET Wine and Spirit Education Trust Diploma Program, a testament to her unwavering dedication to mastery.

Recognized for her blend of approachability and ambition, Karen transitioned from winemaking to Vineyard Operations Manager at Andrew Peller Limited in 2020. Leveraging her comprehensive understanding of both viticulture and winemaking, she aimed to foster synergy between vineyard and winemaking teams, ultimately enhancing processes and wine quality.

Karen’s commitment to sustainability is evident through her chairmanship of the BC Wine Grape Council Sustainability Committee SWBC from 2016 to 2020. A fervent advocate for sustainable farming practices, she embraces technological advancements to nurture and improve the land.

In her leisure moments, Karen finds joy in gardening, exploring the outdoors, and embarking on culinary adventures. An enthusiastic cook, she continuously seeks out wine and food sensory experiences, relishing every opportunity to deepen her understanding and appreciation of flavors.

When not immersed in travels exploring the world of wine and cuisine, Karen can be found tending to her garden, carefully nurturing her plants and harvesting the fruits of her labor. She delights in sourcing fresh Okanagan-grown produce from local farms, using them to create homemade delights such as canning and preserves, adding her personal touch to the flavors of the region.
